MD’s Story So Far
I started making and wearing my own jewellery in 2008/2009. Not only was this therapeutic for me, as it forced me to be mindful at that very moment, it also allowed me to express myself in ways that I hadn’t before. In 2010 I wrote a business plan, created my website and ordered my business cards. I thought I was ready to start selling my jewellery – but fear and self-doubt took over and I decided against it.
In 2012, I decided I would try again and I relaunched MaroonDawta® on my 27th birthday (November 29th, 2012), a decision I am still so proud of.
What’s behind the name?
The name “MaroonDawta” was chosen to pay homage to my heritage as a Jamaican Maroon. “Dawta” is “daughter” spelt with a Jamaican twist to sneakily throw a little Patois in the works!
So, who/what are these Maroons then?
The first sets of Jamaican Maroons were the runaway slaves who continued their African traditions on the hills of Jamaica. Led by Queen Nanny, the Maroons were fierce warriors and defenders of their freedom. Their resilience and ingenuity were (and are still) well-respected and celebrated in Jamaica and throughout the world. [Read more on the Maroons here]
