MaroonDawta® is my baby; better yet, an extension of me; my own little hub where I can express myself exactly as I choose to. A place where I can share my art, passion and story to someone else who may need it. No theme, no box, no category, just artwork that moves me.
After making jewellery in 2009, I decided to relaunch and rebrand in 2012 making namely earrings, but in 2015 I decided to create more healing pieces that nourished the soul.
“In 2015 I dropped ‘fear’ and external expectations and took MaroonDawta® to places I envisioned she could go. MaroonDawta® was known for earrings but I wanted to do more than that. I wanted to showcase my interpretation of art; I wanted to celebrate the art of being a woman – our fragility, our vulnerability, our wisdom, our mistakes…our strength! I wanted to transform MaroonDawta® into a community rather than just a shop.” – Tremaine (Owner/Designer/Wine sipper/Dog stroker)
What’s behind the name?
The name ‘MaroonDawta’ was chosen to pay homage to my heritage as a Jamaican Maroon and ‘Dawta’ is ‘daughter’ spelt with a Jamaican twist to sneakingly throw a little Patois in the works!
So, who/what are these Maroons then?
The first sets of Jamaican Maroons were the runaway slaves who continued their African traditions on the hills of Jamaica. Led by Queen Nanny, the Maroons were fierce warriors and defenders of their freedom. Their resilience and ingenuity was (and is still) well respected and celebrated in Jamaica and throughout the world. [Read more on the Maroons here]
My vision for MaroonDawta® is to be the one-stop shop for inspired living by providing beautiful artwork promoting self-love, self-belief and self-acceptance.
